Re-programming the mind

Did you know that you have been programmed? Whether this was through your parents, your environment, the company you keep, traumatic experiences…your mind has been conditioned to think the way it does.

Half of the work in becoming who you want to be, who you truly are, is realising you have been programmed. Realising the beliefs you hold, the limits on what you can and can’t achieve, your base assumptions and how you feel about yourself are most likely inputs from the external. This is half the work. To realise the extent of the brainwash.

The other half is to begin the journey to undo this. Repetition is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. Just as the external programmed your mind to repeat in its incessant chatter the beliefs that others taught you to hold true, you must now replace all this old data with the data of your choice. This is where the power lies. Through repetition every day without fail you can counter the bombardment of thoughts and replace old data with new data you have selected.

1.) One way I do this is through using the app think up. It allows you to create different playlists of affirmations, record them in your own voice and play them on a loop. You can create a playlist for self confidence, weight loss, self love, health, gratitude, recovery from mental illness, stress relief, mental toughness, money, motivation, love, insomnia, abundance, studies… you name it. It’s all there. This is the new data which regularly repeated on a loop will reprogram the mind. You can listen in the gym, in the shower, on your commute to work, on a walk, when running errands. You can have specific playlists for different times of the day and to make a routine out of. Morning and evening. This is absolutely powerful and will shift the horizons of what you believe to possible. If you take anything from this post, invest in the app and use it with intentionality on a consistent basis to replace old programming with new programming you have selected.

2.) A second way I do this is through meditation. I have a morning and evening routine of meditations for specific issues I wish to work on as well as for beliefs I allowed the external to imprint in my mind which I have found difficult to shake off. No matter what is happening, no matter how you feel, begin your day with meditation. You can listen to several quick meditations in the morning for issues such as inner child healing, self love, etc and several before you sleep. This way you prop your morning and evening up with the thoughts you want to wake up to and the thoughts you want to fall asleep to. It doesn’t have to be difficult. You can meditate in bed- as soon as you wake up in the morning and just before sleep at night. This ultimately counters any programming such as negative encounters and interactions that may have taken place form the external while you were going about your day.

3.) Number three is the final and most important. You have to learn to choose what you want to interact with during the day. This is because anything has the potential to cause trauma and thus programming large and small. If you are in an environment that is consistently hostile – find a way to leave. If you have friends who frequently make snide remarks are disrespectful and do not bring positive energy- leave. This is not because you are weak but because this has the potential to programme your mind and your mind is all you have. Your mind is your prize, your gift and will determine just how spectacular you want your life to be and how unstoppable a force you wish to become. Recognising the avenues which have the potential to programme your mind is like constructing a dam in all the departments of your life you don’t want poisonous water to reach you. In this way it serves as prevention where the cure for the harmful water that does reach you is what I have outlined in points one and two. In circumstances where you are unable to leave you must create a habit of grounding yourself back into your own mind after the harm has been in your proximity. This grounding is up to you to establish. It can be deep breathing, taking a beak, creating a new present moment. Anything you wish. Recognise that harm can come in the form of traumatic news, negative company, a hostile co worker, disrespectful emails. If you do not act this has the possibility to program a belief that until that moment you did not hold. The mind is your garden and you absolutely need to control what and who has access to it as well as the potential for it to be influenced.
